Turn It Up Or Off? What’s Best For Your A/C?

It’s not 115 degrees yet, but you’re probably already using your air conditioner in the late afternoon and early evening. This time of year, many homeowners wonder if they should simply turn off their air conditioner when they’re not at home and crank it up when they are.

At Simply the Best Heating & Cooling, we do not recommend turning your unit off this time of year for several important reasons.

What’s Best For Your A/C?

First, turning off your air conditioner when you’re not at home will result in your home’s temperature climbing considerably – particularly if it’s during the afternoon and evening. If it’s 95 degrees outside, your inside temperature can escalate well into temperatures that are uncomfortable. This means that when you turn on your A/C, it will have to be working harder and longer than if you had regulated the temperature through the day. This can affect the lifespan of your system, and it actually uses more electricity.

The other issue has to do with mold and mildew which grow in warm, moist environments. By turning your system off and letting the temperature rise, you’re actually encouraging the growth of these not so healthy organisms. Then, when you turn on the A/C, you’ll blow them through your vents and into your home. For allergy and asthma sufferers, this can be a big problem!

Instead of manually shutting off your air conditioner when you’re away, the smarter solution is to set your programmable thermostat accordingly. For example, if you’re comfortable with the temperature being 75 degrees, set it for this temperature when you’re home. When you’re away at work from 8 to 5 each day, set the thermostat to 80 to 83 degrees. When you return home, your A/C can kick back into action to lower the temperature back into your comfort zone.

This approach is much easier on your system and more energy efficient.
